Red Tac Gear, Kestrel Pouch Review

I recently found this innovative product on eBay while looking for Red Tac sandbags. It caught my attention as I myself, like I’m sure many of you, have a bag or kit of essentials such as sandbags, Kestrel, range finder, log book, and a few rounds.

If you don’t already have one, consider putting one together.  This bag has a very good purpose whether I am going to the range or on a hunt.  It HAS to come along and all my essentials are in it to engage a target or game animal. So I saw a need to try one of these and see if it could find a home in my gear. For only $25.00 and less than $3.00 shipping, I ordered one.

The Red Tac expected quality shines through as all seams are double stitched, no threads are exposed to start fraying.  It has a keeper flap that Velcros, and also buckles down.  Inside the pouch, there is actually a flap of Velcro that can be folded over the front.

This would be handy to those of you who feel the sound of tearing Velcro is not real natural to the game and could draw attention to you, so you can just use the buckle and be stealth.  It has loops on the back to be used for securing it to your backpack or gear bag.  It fits my 2500 NV very nicely, the only thing that is slightly challenging is what to do with the string. Red Tac made the pouch the right size for the Kestrel, so the typical routine of wrapping the string around it does not work. What I have found works is just pushing the string in first and it all fits nice and snug. One could remove the string from the Kestrel but this looks to be a permanent modification, I am not sure I would like to make yet.

In the field, I liked having the unit with its own exterior pouch with the easier access than in a zipped pouch.  It made for faster pack up and pack out.  In the pictures you may see I actually attached it with zip ties, and found that to work great.

I chose the “Ranger” color and it seems to match the Kestrel color well.  In fact, one would even think it came with the unit (hint…wink…#Kestrel).

I think it’s a very simple but perfect addition for any of your loadouts, and if you’re like me and everything needs its place, pick up one of these, it won’t disappoint!
