Last year I used my backpack as a rear rest with a bi-pod to shoot a sheep at 550 yards. One shot kill, and it was a good solid setup while I was essentially standing in some huge rocks. It was total improvisation. A couple months later I shot a mountain goat at 540 and used a rolled up down jacket that was in a dry sac as a rear rest. I really did not like it because it was really not firm enough. It was another one shot kill, but do not plan on that one again.

My question is to you folks that have a lot more experience shooting distance in the mountains, what is your favorite rear rest item. I posed this on another forum and a bino case with binos in them was a fav of some. I am going on sone more hunts this fall and want to think through my optinos first.

I haven’t had a lot of long range shooting experience, but I have carried Jeff’s lite fill bag chasing sheep these last few years. It really takes a lot of the commotion of finding a solid rest out.

You are right about that. You can watch a band of rams for 5 hours and then all the sudden it can be “commotion” central. You are like WTH happened here.

All good well placed shots start with a solid shooting platform. The rear bag IS the foundation a good platform is built on. We as long range shooters and hunters needed a bag like this. This is why I set out and designed The Hunter Wedge Bag series. Sold exclusively in the LRO store.

Thanks for your support everyone!!

I've been product testing for my agency for the past several months, which includes rear bags. I finally broke down and personally purchased the Hunter Wedge Bag. With our jurisdictional set up, we do not have to worry about carrying everything very far, so I stayed with the regular bag, not Get Lite. Processing and shipping was a breeze. Jeff and his wife really took care of my package for shipping, as our delivery drivers take pride in doing as much damage as possible. Side note, if you want to test your packaging, please DM me, and we can handle that test! I took the HWB out for my initial testing with three separate rifles, which included my 6.5PRC, 300RUM, and one 308 WIN test rifle. The lightest rifle weighed 11.5 lbs. and the heaviest is 15.5 lbs. Right out of the box, I could tell this bag was built different from the other bags I have tested. It was made with care and is a high-quality product. I used the bag for all three rifles, but I mainly focused on our department test rifle, in 308 WIN. This rifle has been shooting between .6 to .8 the past few outings. This outing my averages dropped and stayed between .397 and .6. I leave for Precision Rifle school in two weeks, and this will be the only bag that is going with me. Since I purchased this bag out of my own funds, our department will be purchasing three of these in the near future!

I truly appreciate this product (as I sip my coffee from my new tumbler) and look forward to my team getting their hands on the best bag out there. Our department budget is terrible, but I take extreme pride in getting us the absolute best gear that we can find.

Thank you, Jeff and your wife, for taking good care of us, all around.

This is really good to hear. We have received many reports of groups shrinking with our bags. That was the intent when I created it. The design is built to supply a solid rear foundation for the rifle and maintain it during the recoil pulse. All in a platform that works in the field as well as it does at the range. This is mandatory for accurate long range pokes.

Thank you for the kind words and we are so glad to are liking our product that we care so much about.

I watched the video and noticed the design was based on an angled stock like McMillan GW. How would these work with something like the Peak 44 Bastion which appears to be more flat.

The long range only bag works great with everything from your sporter style toe lines like some of the McMillan‘s to more flat Stocks like the manners EH style toe lines and the Gunwerks Magnus and clymr Stocks. We strongly discouraged Stocks like the rock stock that basically have no drop at the toe because they’re just not ideal for hunting conditions where you may actually need to use the drop at the toe to get a little bit of vertical change quickly while trying to get your shot off on an animal

Thank you. Thoughts on the Peak 44 Bastion overall? Based on what you state above I think the bag is not an issue. Just curious about real world feedback on the Bastion. Thanks again

I don’t have any real world experience other than touching one. I do think it looks like a great option although not highly custom like a manners or a McMillan. It does seem to check a lot of boxes.

Agree with the previous posts about the LRO Bags. I have all and prefer the full size rear with the additional bag. I have the get lite version as well and that one is what accompanies me when I need the shed the weight otherwise I take the other for the most stability.

I was just telling someone about them on this fishing trip to Ketchikan and how I clip them to my belt loop with a carabiner. They’ve been with me on every trip. Both trips for Canadian black bear and both trips to So. Africa. They will be with me in 2027 to So Africa and an elk hunt this fall.

Here is mine a few days ago sheep hunting. I NEVER thought I would carry something like a rear rest. But, when these were taken we were watching rams at 635 yards. None were legal oldest was a seven year old. I did some practice aiming and dry firing with and without the bag. Conclusion - bag goes on all long range possible hunts.

I use the mini wedge lite bag, strap it to my quick detach bino harness so it’s easily dropped when I’m setting up. Only problem I’ve had is leaving it on a Wyoming ridge when we had to jump and quickly run a couple hundred yards to get set up again…. Ordered a replacement when I got home last October….

Jeff, what about the Oryx chasis? I have my 300 WSM Savage in the Oryx, absolutely love the Oryx. I need a good rear bag my bags are really a PIA when using them.

Since the ORYX is a flat bottom bag rider you will loose some adjustment in elevation. But I still think the Hunters Wedge is the best option and quickest bag there is to set up.
