Anyone hunt on National Hunting/Fishing Day?
It happened to work out this year for my boy and I to actually hunt on National Hunting Day. Typically its too hot and only archery season around here. Youth season opens with archery but typically its hard with busy life to get out.
We got out for a morning whitetail hunt that did not net anything. It was raining most the day before and night so I figured once the rain stopped they might be moving. No such luck! After coming back home for the mid day lunch we ran to the range to get a couple rounds down the barrel on the hunting rifle for fun, and then headed back out to a new spot. Walking in we had a close encounter with a doe at 7 yards walking out of some sorghum but no shot opportunity for the boy. After climbing into the stand we had several whitetail does moving around in some tall grass. One happened to walk out into the open at 134 yards and my boy methodically went through the shot sequence with patience. When the doe turned broadside he took several breaths, steadied the rifle, and sent 1 round that destroyed the lungs for a perfect bang/flop.
Lots of hugs and high fives were exchanged. 30 minutes later she was gutted and loaded into the truck. Great day! Nothing like hunting with a kid!
