So today I went to fill my Montana Mule deer B tag. I found some doe's feeding in the hay field. I used the irrigation canal to sneak in close as I could, then belly crawled until my barrel was outside the tall grass. I did some ranging and had some at 104 to 107 yards. That is a pretty good poke for a rifle over 140 years old that used a black powder cartridge with a 190 gr. cast boolit that I hand loaded to about 1150 fps. I waited and one large doe moved a little closer. Prone off only my elbow's I sighted in for the shot with the buckhorn open sights. The old 73 barked and the sound of the bullet impact was very impressive. The doe hunched and headed out to bed. It did take some tracking, but in the end I notched my tag. This was something I wanted to do. Just because. I love these old lever guns, and now I have filled a tag with one.

A great way to spend all the effort getting the loads and the rifle ready. Looks like the shot was well placed too. I'm happy for you.

Nice 1873! I thought I was cool with my 1976 marlin 336 30-30. What a rewarding hunt!

Perty neat. Old lever guns are really fun to handle and shoot. One of these days I'm gonna get a deer with my Ruger Redhawk and a 240 grain Keith boolit.

Did you find the slug? Any deformation? How was the wounding effect of the round?

Again congrats.

I think this is super cool Jeff. Don’t take this the wrong way, but I think it fits you. We could easily take you back in time, and you would fit right in with those guys roughing it out west.

Congrats on this. Lots of work went into getting her to shoot again. Really cool.
