I have a 375 Cheytac, currently shooting 350gr SMK’s

I was considering shooting a lighter projectile for hunting 1000m-1500m

I am in Australia and projectile choices are limited, there is a small supply of CEB Lazers and MTH and there are also some 329gr Hammer Hunters available

Do you think the hammer bullets are worth bothering with or just go straight to the CEB, my thoughts with the lighter projectiles were more velocity and flatter shooting for hunting at moderate distances, not for cranking out to 2 miles , usually I am keen to go heavy but I reckon the 375 projectiles are already heavy enough, the 330gr class projectiles I think are more aimed at the RUM and 375 and 378 weatherbys.

The SMK’s I have now are shooting extremely well but I am concerned as to how they will perform on game so have only used them on targets and gongs, I am shooting Sambar Deer in the mountains similar body mass to your Elk cross gully and canyon shots ect.

Any hands on experience with lighter than 350gr projectiles in the Cheytac would be appreciated

Cheers

I have only a few cases with limited experience with the Hammers. One was the BC's were lower than advertised. They are not high BC bullets so retained velocity and wind drift will be of concern. Plus the terminal performance was not desirable in my limited experience on elk.

I have taken several elk with the CEB Lazer Max bullets. They worked well when placed in the shoulder where large bones need to be broken down. They are a tipped bullet and I feel that is very important to initiate expansion on solid lathe turned bullets.

Since you are hunting, my vote goes for the CEB Lazer Max

Thanks for replying Broz

Before you answered I punched the details into AB (what I should have done first)

The Hammer would be subsonic at 1600, drop, drift and energy were all not desirable for long range, 600-800 sure

Have you shot the CEB MTH ? There is only a very limited supppy in Australia of Lazers but there is a good amount of 350gr MTH

I have only shot the Lazers. I like tips on solids for hunting and the 400 Lazers in my 375 are awesome even after going subsonic. They were still flying true at 6022 yards and came in point first still stable.
