Early October Colorado Antelope Hunt – Clothing list.

I’m getting my gear together for an early October Colorado antelope hunt. Temperatures can swing quite a bit from cold mornings to warmer afternoons, so I’m planning around a layering system that lets me add or remove insulation as needed.

Here’s the clothing and footwear I’ll be taking:

Boots

Crispi Thor II

These are the most comfortable hunting boots I’ve ever had. They’re lightweight, non-insulated, and work extremely well for early-season and warmer-weather hunts.

Pants

KUIU Kutana Stretch Woven Pant

These are extremely comfortable and lightweight. Even on colder mornings, I’d rather use a lightweight pant like the Kutana and add insulation underneath than wear a heavier pant all day once temperatures start climbing.

Lower Base Layers

King’s XKG Foundation 260 Zip Off Merino Bottom

I really like these because the legs zip completely off. When a cold morning turns into a warm afternoon, I can remove the base layer without having to take my boots off. I prefer this setup over designs that use Velcro.

KUIU ULTRA Merino 160 Bottom

This will be another lightweight merino option. I’ll use it when I expect to keep a base layer on for most or all of the day.

Upper Base Layers

KUIU ULTRA Merino 120 LT LS Crew-T

This will be my lightweight merino top for warmer conditions or as the first layer when temperatures drop.

KUIU PRO Merino 200 Zip-T

This gives me a warmer merino option that can work as either a heavier base layer or mid-layer.

Insulation

KUIU Kenai Hooded Jacket

If it gets cold enough that the merino layers aren’t enough, I’ll add the Kenai. I don’t expect to need a heavy insulated jacket very often on this hunt, but it gives me another step in the layering system.

KUIU Super Down PRO Hooded Jacket

I probably won’t need this much, but western weather can change quickly and I’d rather have a lightweight, packable down jacket in the pack than wish I had brought one.

Rain Gear

KUIU Kutana Storm Shell Jacket

KUIU Kutana Storm Shell Pant

This will most likely be the rain system I bring on the Colorado antelope hunt. There are lighter options available, but I don’t like owning a different rain setup for every hunt. I prefer using gear I already trust across a wide range of conditions.

For more severe weather, I also use:

KUIU Yukon TR Rain Jacket

KUIU Yukon TR Rain Pant

The Yukon is more than I expect to need on this particular hunt, but it’s what I’ll use when conditions call for something more substantial.

The main goal with this system is flexibility. Early October in Colorado can mean cold mornings, plenty of movement during the day, and much warmer temperatures by afternoon. I’d rather start with lightweight outer layers and adjust the insulation underneath as conditions change.

What are you guys running for early-season antelope hunts, and is there anything in your clothing system that has become a must-have?

Similar but about the same as I am taking on an elk hunting this weekend. Temps dropped a bit her this past week with a big storm that rolled through Monday and Tuesday. Day time temps will climb again with cold overnight and early morning lows so layering is a must. I get hot so I strip off the layers before sweating too much underneath. I'll be taking one of those black and yellow plastic containers full of the options listed above.

Did you forget the Darn Tough socks? Maybe couple of gloves?

I disliked gloves until I wore light weight knit merino wool ones. Sub temps and I can walk all day without sweating and getting cold in them.
I’ve tried them all and I have to wear something when it’s cold because my hands get extremely cold but I can’t shoot with them so they’ve gotta come off during shots

I use Bridgedale socks, and I absolutely hate gloves
I’ve done a fair amount of sheep hunting so gloves were imperative in shale and rocks. My favorites were the Orvis thin leather gloves . I use them all the time for upland hunting
