I got into a herd of elk this fall with a bugling bull and snuck into a hundred yards.
I shot the bull behind the shoulder with a 215 berger out of a 30 Nosler with 2950 muzzle velocity.
Broadside shot through the trees and bull instantly dropped and died after a few kicks as is typical with berger bullets. As you can see from the pic of the entrance wound the bullet didn't seem to damage the diaphragm just behind the rib cage and it certainly didn't pass all the way through. If you just saw the picture you would think the bullet exploded on the rib cage. obviously not the case but strange none the less. I didn't open him up but noticed a large amount of lung material pour from his mouth while quartering him up.
I'm guessing the bullet hole entering the diaphragm was small enough that it was plugged up while I was breaking the elk down.
