So, back when Bullets.com went out of business I bought a bunch of boxes of 170 EOL. My plan was to build a 270 Weatherby 8 twist especially for these bullets. And I did. This barrel just DID NOT like them at all. They did however Love 150gr ABLR with 7828 at 3350!!
My next devious maniacal plan is to build a 27 Nosler for the 170 gr EOL.
Can anyone direct me to anyone/ Smith who can chamber a Remage barrel and has this reamer?
Also wondering if getting a set of 26 or 27 Nosler bushing dies for sizing is a good idea or if there is a better option?
If anyone has a better option I'm all ears.
Anyone have any ideas?

I believe Steve at Hammer Bullets has a 27 nosler reamer. Might be worth picking his brain.

Just ordered a Pacnor 8 twist, SS Super match, Senero contour, 6 flute, Remage with their Pac Nut .

Sized a new piece of 26 Nosler in the RCBS dies... one pass and ot worked flawlessly. 20190807_171806.jpg

The headspace will not be a problem since I'm pushing the shoulders back so fireforming loads might not be dramatically different from 2nd firing.
Plan on H1000, N570, RL33, Retumbo, 8133 development... probably in that order.

New to the forum,
I had one built by PacNor a couple months ago. They make great barrels. Been working on load development. Mine is 30” 1-8 twist sendero contour. Accuracy is just under sub moa so far with both bullets you mentioned. Have to make up all my loads of course, no data available. Jury is still out, but I think it has potential.

Did you use 26 Nosler brass?

Yes, 26 through a rcbs 27 die. Works great, although my first batch closed hard on bolt, rubbing shoulder a bit. I reset my FL sizing to cam over on the up stroke a bit more firmly. Bolt closes like a dream.

Thank you. I am sizing Norma 26 Nosler also.

You wouldn't mind sharing which powders and bullets you've tried??

I listed the powders I plan on trying first but don't mind expanding my list.
Thanks.

That's a good thing. Casey and Jay are really good guys to deal with and are happy to answer my questions...which is quite a bit sometimes. I usually ask a smith how much their reamer is used but I didn't figure their 27 N had many rpms on it, lol.

If you click on my user name a list will pop up, it includes ' private message '.
But I don't think Jeff will mind us sharing loads on the public forum.

170 Berger, 150 ABLR, 160 Nosler part.
Rl 33, RL 25, h1000, us869.
RL 33 seems best so far. Best group yet was 82 gr rl 33- 3260fps 150 ablr. No pressure signs at all, plan on going higher.
Best in 170 was also rl33, but 2900 fps at 76 grs, have along way to go to increase velocity.

That sounds right, my first 26 and 28 Nosler both love RL33, my current 26 prefers H50BMG. The guy across the pond said his likes RL33 also. My barrel is still a few weeks out. I wonder if N570 will beat 33 for velocity?

Oh, I almost forgot. I sent Jay a dummy round to throat the chamber for 170gr boat tail is right below the neck. 20190807_171806.jpg

That seems right, I have high hopes for the VLD but so far not great. Keep trying, I have never had great luck with the Bergers in any rifles. I am going to try them at 200 yds this week. Perhaps need a bit more distance to settle down??

Not sure how far you are jumping these 170s. My 28 N likes 175gr Elite Hunters jumping .095". I do seating depth test for every barrel. Maybe try seating them deeper.

Had a good range day at 200 yds. Vld shot and 150 ABLR under 1/2 MOA. Need to Chrony next session and I will post my loads. Have another PacNor 1-8.5 twist I plan on sending them to build a sporter version.

Well, looks like Pac Nor burned down. My barrel was 10 weeks in so it was due any day. I don't know what to do now.
All the employees got out safe though.

I did a 270 wsm for the berger 170 I had it built on a long action so I could seat them out. It is my lightweight setup it weighs just a little over 4 lbs with a 20 inch barrel, it's a tack driver out to 1000, another option for you

Thanks. I have considered that option in a medium length action like a Tikka but want to utilize the full capacity of a long action (+/- 90gr).
What action did you use?

So, Kathy just called me and said my barrel was out getting fluted when the shop burned, it's being shipped out this week!

I ordered the same barrel from Mcgowen a few weeks ago, I will fire form with it.

28 inch pac nor 1-8 sendero contour match .
170 vld shoot like crap as increase velocity, 150 ABLR shoot lights out!

Best load so far 84.0 RL-33 150 ABLR, 3.410 oal. 3340 fps. 1/2 inch group 200 yards! No pressure signs. I have no reason to go faster . Done!

170 Vld liked it slow, best load was 75.0 RL25, 3.400 oal, 3100 fps , no pressure signs. Went up to 80.5 RL 33 with this bullet also at 3160, no pressure signs, groups about 2 moa, crap!

I have, no luck. Berger bullets just dont shoot well for me in most of my rifles. Lights out in a couple though. Not bagging on there products at all, I wish I had better luck. In this rifle the 150 ABLR is so good Im not wearing out my barrel in hopes for the Berger 170.
That being said, I have plans for another 27 Nosler in a sporter that I will try the Bergers first. Its a 1-8.5 twist instead of my current 1-8, who knows?

Found this article by Layne Simpson touching on the 27 Nosler. I also contacted Nosler and they hope to have some reloading data posted online in Feb.

Haha, it figures I just started fireforming cases last week. I had to neck turn twice PITA.
I'm forming with an honest light load. Old 150gr SMK and 80.5gr Ramshot Magnum at 3250.
It will be a few weeks before I get the cases done, then I'll start development with 170gr Bergers. 20200119_160105.jpg

I had to chuckle myself when I read the news! I think this will prove to be a huge hit for Nosler and a bit of an embarrassment not to launch it first in there line. My 2 cents.

Got out today with 170EH and N570, told myself I wouldn't do powder work up until all my brass is fire formed but I had to start from scratch as there is absolutely no load data, not from Berger, quickload or anyone I've asked.

Virgin Norma brass, 170gr EH .006" OTL, WLRM primers. Four shots each.
80.5gr 3227 fps 25 es 10 sd
81.0gr 3250 fps 21 es 9 sd
81.5gr 3253 fps 27 es 11 sd
82.0gr 3278 fps 36 es 15 sd.
All primer pockets still measure .207" to .2075". No high pressure signs at all at 20°F.

In comparison 81.5gr Reloder 33 3066fps. 82.2gr was 3085 fps.

N570 did not perform the same in fire formed brass.
