Lots of ways to get there, some better than others. One common, very vital fact. No matter the method, an accurate distance to target will be the most important data for any firing solution. I insist on a reasonable small beam divergence, and enough power to range small non reflective targets well beyond where I intend to hunt.

And I practice with it a lot so know how to make it fail as well as perform.

My rangefinder is a Leica CRF900. It is 16-17 years old and still running just fine. With that said, I don't think it is going to get the job done for my future plans. I'm going to need an upgrade for ranging. Most of the critters I've shot past 500 were ranged off trees, and "guestimated" how far from the trees. Not exactly an accurate way of doing things, but has been effective. An upgrade is definitely in order.

For the last several years I have used the Custom Turret Tapes which are, low cost, very durable, and available for just about any scope turret. As has been mentioned, with most all of the loads used for LR shooting, atmospheric conditions have little, if any effect on ballistic drops under 500 yards, at least within the elevations(500’-6000’) and temperatures(0-75F) I hunt. I will have the yardage calibrated for an average of my conditions. I order Custom Turret Tapes with both an MOA lower scale for +500 yard shooting, and an upper yardage scale for better visibility and faster work at the shorter ranges. I have used both the Sig 2400 and a Gunwerks G7 Ballistic rangefinders with excellent results on game/varmints out to 1200 yards.
